BECAUSE THESE REALLY DO SOUND GREAT. JUST GOT THESE HEADPHONES,AND THEY SOUND EXCELLENT.I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT ALL THE REVIEWS ABOUT THE LACK OF BASS.HERE'S THE DEAL THESE HEADPHONES ARE VERY PICKY ABOUT FIT AND SEAL.YOU ABSOLUTLY MUST HAVE A PROPER SEAL AND PROPER TIP INSERTED ON HEADPHONE TO ACHIEVE THE VERY GOOD AND POWERFUL BASS RESPONSE THESE HEADPHONES ARE CAPABLE OF.THE CLEAR SILICONE TIPS ARE WAY TO STIFF TO SEAL PROPERLY,THE FOAM TIPS ARE ALSO STIFF AND SOMEWHAT PAINFULL FOR ME, BUT CAUSE A GOOD SEAL.THE BLACK RUBBER FLEX SLEEVES (SIZE MEDIUM)FOR ME WERE THE WINNING SETUP.DURING MY EXPERIMENTATION WITH THESE I FOUND THAT THE WRONG TIP WILL GIVE YOU SOME BASS BUTT WILL SOUND THIN AND NOT FULL BODIED AT ALL. SO YOU REALLY DO HAVE TO FIND THE RIGHT TIP.FOR PEOPLE WITH TINNY AND ODD SHAPED EAR CANALS WILL HAVE TO EITHER GIVE UP ON THESE ,OR HAVE CUSTOM EARTIPS MADE WHICH SHURE GIVES A PHONE NUMBER IN THE PACKAGE FOR INFO ON THIS.HIGHS AND MIDS ARE ALSO VERY CLEAN AND PRECISE.AND THE CLEAR SHELL IS REALLY COOL TO LOOK AT.IM GLAD I BOUGHT THESE DESPITE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ABOUT THE BASS.
Sound quality wise, they are very good. The Grado's are great and if you don't mind the size, I would highly recommend them. The cables are nice and thick and look like they will last a good long time. I used to travel with Grado SR80's, but their size was annoying.
With any in ear head phone the fit is important for both comfort and the sound quality, so make sure you get that right. Another good thing is that these are medium efficient, so you won't need to push the volume all the way up to get a decent volume out of them. I paid $70 for these and I think they are a good value at that price. I am once again shopping for new phones and will use these as my comparison. I've owned these phones for about 3 years now. These are the phones I travel with a few times a year. Otherwise they will be uncomfortable and not sound as good as they can. The build quality on these is also very good.
This also leads to one of the problems I have with them, after a few hours they become uncomfortable. Much better than the units that comes with an iPod and they are also better than the Etymotic 6i I also owned. I would ideally want small phones that sounded as good as my Grados Mids and highs are very good. I ended up using the smallest foam size and I have to very carefully compress the foam before I put it on. The bass is ok, not great.
Their compact size makes them ideal. Other headphones I have had, like the Etymotic, had thin flimsy cables which made me concerned as to whether they would last without breaking. But once in they really do block out other sounds, at least as good as other cheap active noise canceling headphones. I initially had some issues with the fit. I also have to jam it in pretty good into my ear.
I've tried the headphones from multiple sources, if there is a trick to making these sound better, I missed it. When compared to every other pair of earphones I have, including some $10 radio shack headphones, they sounded awful. Very little base, and almost like it was coming from a tin can.
I use the earphone on a daily basis on my way to and from work. This is very disappointing. I actually like those earphones. But there is on big problem. As I said, there is no damage to the isolation but by playing with the wire I can locate the area were the wire inside must have broken. Now, in January 2010 one wire again is broken, and this time from the inside. And this time there is nothing visible from the outside, but one channel goes on an off depending how I move the wire.
My impression is that the isolation does not age very well. I treat them very carefully and I am very confident that the damage must have come from aging.
I thought that heavy usage over two years pays its toll. My first pair had a broken isolation close to the ear piece and you could see the wires inside.
I like the sound, the extra length of the wire, and the noise isolation. If I do not use them I wrap the wire around my iPod video.
Today I ordered earphones from a different company. When the wiring of my first pair broke after maybe two years of constant usage I got the same model again last year in May 2009.
After less than 8 months of usage I am facing again wire problems.
until the sound went out. I was very much pleased with these earphones. I'd buy me another pair, they were that good, but I'm afraid to risk the possibility of them breaking again. I've only owned them for about six months, and already the sound has quit working on the right side. The sound was high quality - not what you have to settle for in those cheap $10 pairs. They fit great, and I used them all the time.
